First solids: baby-led or spoon-fed

Two approaches without the argument about the “right” one: what they share, where the risks are and how to choose.

Baby-led weaning means the baby tries small pieces of food from the family table. The classic approach means separately prepared purée given on a spoon, with the portion growing gradually. Both can be safe and both need attention.

What they share: starting at around six months when there are signs of readiness (a steady head, sitting with support, interest in food) and never replacing a whole feed with solids. New products are introduced one at a time while watching for reactions.

The choice depends on daily life: purée is easier to track by volume, pieces fit more quickly into a family dinner. Mixing the two is fine as well: what matters is a safe texture, a calm setting and an adult nearby.
