Conversations about “not enough milk” almost always start from sensations rather than data. The breasts stopped feeling full, the baby asks more often, pumping gives less — and a conclusion is built on those signs. Yet none of them says anything directly about milk supply.
What actually counts: six or more wet nappies a day after the first week, steady weight gain, calm awake periods and rhythmic swallowing at the breast. Together these are more reliable than any weighing at home before and after feeds.
When data is missing, a weighed feed at the doctor’s office and a latch review with a specialist help. Often the issue is not the amount of milk but latch depth, body position and how often you feed — all of which can be fixed within days.
